Our Story
In the Village of Ayr, in the tower of the new Fire Hall, hangs a small brass bell.
The call of the fire bell signaled a village in crisis. In response, everyone, including men, women, children and even horses ran to help. They brought buckets, tools, water – and courage. Today, the Ayr fire bell remains a symbol of one of the most notable characteristics of Ontario pioneer life. The spirit of community and cooperation.
It is in this spirit of cooperation and self-reliance that Ayr Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company was established in the Village of Ayr in 1893.
We were created out of a necessity to serve our community. A small group of farmers believed in helping each other protect against devastating fire losses. That time-honoured tradition of neighbour helping neighbour was envisioned over 100 years ago and the same values remain today. Like the community bell that hangs in the fire hall, Ayr Farmers Mutual is a lasting symbol of the power of Mutual cooperation.
