Towing and Storage Safety: Protecting Your Vehicle

There’s nothing quite like a summer road trip: open roads, sunny days, and often times a trailer, boat, or your favourite outdoor recreational toy in tow. Whether you’re hauling a camper across Ontario or storing a seasonal vehicle, a little prep goes a long way in keeping your gear – and everyone on the road – safe and sound. After all, the only thing you want to be hauling is memories, not mishaps!

Here are five tips to tow smart and store right:

Pre-Trip Towing Prep

Before you hit the road, make sure your vehicle and trailer are as ready as you are:

  • Know your limits: Check your owner’s manual to avoid overloading your vehicle’s weight limits. Tip: passengers and cargo count towards that weight!
  • Hitch it right. Double-check that your trailer hitch, safety chains, and wiring are securely attached.
  • Lights, brakes, action! Make sure all of your signals and brake controllers are working.
  • Keep it balanced: Distribute weight evenly to help keep swaying in check.

Drive Like a Pro with a Trailer in Tow

Towing changes how your vehicle handles, so take it easy by:

  • Giving yourself room. Allow at least 4–6 seconds of stopping distance between you and the cars ahead.
  • Slow ride, take it easy: Drop your speed by 10-15km/h to help limit trailer sway.
  • Smooth moves only. Accelerate, brake, and turn gradually to maintain control.
  • Keep your motor from running hot: towing can put your engine through its paces. Take frequent breaks to avoid overheating on longer trips (and to keep yourself fresh)!

Know Before You Stow

If you’re storing a car, boat, or RV for the season:

  • Choose a secure location: A dry, well-ventilated garage or monitored storage facility beats leaving your vehicle exposed.
  • Fill it up: Fill your gas tank to prevent condensation and add fuel stabilizer.
  • Don’t be caught drained!  Disconnect your battery or use a trickle charger to keep your battery ready to go when you are.
  • Tire care: Inflate your tires to the appropriate PSI, or use jack stands to prevent flat spots.

Stop Thieves In Their Tracks

Don’t make it easy for thieves to swipe your stuff:

  • Lock it: Hitch and wheel locks are your first line of defence.
  • Track it: A GPS tracker can help you recover your ride if the worst happens.
  • Pack it: If you can, remove tools, electronics, and personal items. If you can’t, make sure they’re out of sight.
